I clearly have a problem already.
(Note I’m looking to stay in FWD until I have more experience)

Why no RWD? I know you said experience but rally-x is a great place to figure out without dying

lol, it’s true and I would consider it, but it’s certainly a much higher level of competition in that class.

It was probably a great car for you. I was trying to stick to FWD for a season or 2 though.
In all honesty I’d like to get a car under a grand, I don’t know if it would stand up to the abuse of a season or 2 of RallyX in that price range though.

I’d get the Neon. GRM found out that if you put stock Gen 2 springs on, you gain about an inch of ride height. Plus, they are so light and fairly competitive. Or you could get this and not have to worry about dents.

E30's man. They’re fantastic rally cars.

Honestly a Neon or Cougar are pretty solid choices, parts are cheap and plentiful plus both are surprisingly agile/quick for what they are

Have you been to any events yet?
Fwd class is going to be a sea of neons, civics, and golfs.. Awd is a million subarus, and Rwd is full of old rx7s. Cheap parts win races.

Yep:
http://oppositelock.kinja.com/mighty-rally-m…
FWD was basically dominated by a Neon ACR and an early 90's Escort.
RWD was mainly Miatas (at least two were supercharged in the modified class).
AWD was of course full of subarus and oddly enough a couple of Rav4s which I don’t think anyone can explain the physics that keeps them on all 4 tires.

I TSD so it’s more about not breaking things over a long distance rather than getting there the fastest. Also helps to be able to choose your lines easily. Our N/A Forester easily stayed with a pack of wrx because I could bomb most holes that they had to avoid.
When I bought the impreza I was looking at parts availablility.. almost everything I did to it was either takeoffs sourced from local subaru guys, or diy cheap mods. It ended up being a fun little runabout - the ej22 is not very fast but hard to hurt.. It was nice to have a scratched up beater as a starting point because no matter what I did it was an improvement.

True, though if I start modifying I’m going to gut the damn thing to make it lighter anyhow and I’ll be in Modified at that point anyhow

Also take a look at mk2 and mk3 golfs as well as 90s civic hatchbacks. They are constiently the fastest cars at ner scca events.

I would probably go with a Neon because of the model’s track record in rallycross, but I would also consider some AE101 (1993-2002) Corollas, and perhaps the Nissan Sentra/200SX from 1990-2006.
Not sure on the Cougar, I’ve driven one and they feel very heavy and have really heavy steering for a FWD coupe. The 3000GT would just break, the Mitsubishi 3.0L was a pretty weak engine from a reliability standpoint. The DSMs are probably both winners, but I’d have a hard time gutting such a neat car.
Just my 2 cents.

Out of the saturns in the area that seems like the best one, new trans helps a lot too

Yeah the Cougar is heavy. Almost as heavy as my Milan. It has to be completely gutted to be useful on track, I hear you can take about 6-700 pounds out of them by gutting them. Bringing them down to about the weight of a minorly modified ZX2

You’d have money for some repairs, maybe upgraded brake pads and new rotors and some used gravel rally tires

Haha getting carried away almost immediately, I like the way you think!
You can always just add a 50 shot of nitrous to the heap of your choice as well. Honestly though.
Putting gravel rally tires on whatever you get will be the best mod you can do so find something with 15" wheels!

True, tires definitely held me back, most people were at LEAST on winter tires while I was rocking my tried and true all seasons.

Did your club have separate classes for all season tires?

Nope, you can run winter in stock class as long as they aren’t studded.
